A Guide To Dachshunds Types & Sizes

Dachshunds are cute animals and all of us enjoy having them around. But they are not all the same. Some are smaller, others are taller and larger. In the end, it all comes down to genetics and other factors as you try to identify the various types of Dachshunds out there. Here are some of the things you want to keep in mind.

Miniature Dachshunds

What you have to keep in mind here is that the Dachshund is already a small dog. The miniature Dachshund is even smaller, it will be around 5-6 inches tall at most and roughly 11 pounds. That’s really small, as you can imagine.

Regular Dachshunds

In the case of regular Dachshunds, they tend to be around 8-9 inches tall and 16-32 pounds. That might not be that much when compared to the miniature species, but they are a bit taller and larger as a whole. Still, they are some of the best and cutest animals out there especially if you love dogs in general.

There are also numerous types of Dachshund coat as well. You have the regular short-haired or smooth Dachshund coat that’s pretty straightforward. There are also some long-haired Dachshunds, these tend to be crossed with a spaniel. Their coat is not extremely thick, but it is pretty large and it does say quite a bit. And you will also find the wire-haired Dachshund that’s crossed most likely with a wire-haired terrier. This one has a short, dense outer coat most of the time.

Coat patterns

The coat pattern will also differ based on the Dachshund and his DNA. That being said, we do have 3 types of patterns. The dapple pattern is showing a merle pattern with dark and light patches of hair. Then there’s the brindle with dark stripes across the entire body and the sable which has a pattern that appears as an overly of hair on the red coat

Eye color

Most Dachshunds will have brown eyes in various shades. That being said, if the coat is lighter in color then the Dachshund eye color can be blue, green or hazel depending on the situation. There are also Dachshunds that have 2 different colored eyes. Researchers and owners seem to think this is an anomaly, but it does appear from time to time. It could be from cross-breeding, but it can also be a result of genetics. You rarely know how these things appear and how they end up bringing this type of situation, but it might be the case in the end.

As you can see, you can find lots of different Dachshund types out there. It all comes down to finding the right one for you and which you empathize with a lot. Dachshunds are very loyal, professional and extremely reliable. They are also fully committed to helping and protecting their owner. And that alone makes them an incredible dog species you just don’t want to miss!
